Redness & Vascular Concerns:

Achieving a Calm and Even Complexion

Redness and visible vascular concerns can leave skin looking flushed, irritated, or uneven, even when you're feeling perfectly calm. At Dermal Glow, we understand the different forms this can take and offer targeted treatments designed to calm the skin, reduce visible vessels, and restore a more even, comfortable complexion

The Different Kinds of Redness You Might Be Seeing

Redness isn't a one-size-fits-all concern; it can show up in a few different ways, and each type has its own underlying cause:

  • Diffuse Redness: A general flushed or pink tone across the cheeks, nose, and chin, often more noticeable after heat, exercise, or alcohol.

  • Telangiectasia (Visible Vessels): Fine, thread-like red or purple lines on the skin's surface, commonly seen around the nose and cheeks, caused by small blood vessels that have become permanently dilated.

  • Rosacea-Related Redness: Persistent facial redness often accompanied by visible vessels, sensitivity, and sometimes small bumps or pustules, typically triggered or worsened by heat, sun, spicy food, and alcohol.

  • Post-Inflammatory Redness: Pink or red marks left behind after a breakout, injury, or any irritation to the skin, which can linger long after the original cause has healed.

  • Sun-Induced Redness and Vessels: Years of UV exposure can permanently damage and dilate small blood vessels, particularly across the cheeks and nose.

Understanding Why Redness and Visible Vessels Develop

At its core, visible redness comes down to what's happening with the small blood vessels just beneath the skin's surface. These vessels can dilate, or widen, in response to triggers like heat, sun exposure, alcohol, spicy food, or emotional stress, causing the temporary flushing most of us are familiar with. With repeated dilation over time, however, some vessels lose their ability to constrict back down fully, becoming permanently widened and visible through the skin as fine red or purple lines.

The skin's barrier function also plays a significant role here. A compromised or weakened skin barrier allows irritants to penetrate more easily and struggles to retain moisture, leading to a heightened inflammatory response that shows up as ongoing redness and sensitivity. This is particularly relevant in conditions like rosacea, where genetics, immune system factors, and skin barrier dysfunction all interact to create a cycle of inflammation that keeps skin reactive and visibly flushed.

Treating visible redness relies on technology that can selectively target the haemoglobin within problem blood vessels, while leaving the surrounding skin untouched. Light-based devices work by delivering energy that is absorbed by haemoglobin, heating the targeted vessel until it collapses and is gradually reabsorbed and cleared by the body. Because the energy is precisely calibrated to target this specific chromophore, treatment can address redness and visible vessels with minimal impact on the surrounding tissue.

Alongside in-clinic treatments, skincare plays a genuinely essential role in managing redness. Because a compromised skin barrier is so often part of the picture, rebuilding and protecting that barrier with the right ingredients helps reduce the ongoing inflammatory trigger, calm reactivity, and make in-clinic results last longer. Daily SPF is non-negotiable here too, since UV exposure is one of the biggest drivers of new vessel formation and ongoing flare-ups, meaning even the best treatment results can be undone without consistent sun protection at home.

Why it happens

What Causes Redness and Vascular Concerns?

Genetics:

A family history of rosacea or generally sensitive, reactive skin significantly increases the likelihood of developing visible redness and vascular concerns. Some people are simply born with vessels that sit closer to the skin's surface or are more prone to dilating in response to everyday triggers.

Sun Damage:

Cumulative UV exposure doesn't just affect pigment-producing cells, it also weakens the walls of small blood vessels over time, making them more likely to dilate permanently. This is why visible vessels are so often concentrated on the most sun-exposed areas of the face, particularly the cheeks and nose.

Everyday Triggers:

Hot showers, saunas, exercise, cold wind, alcohol, caffeine, and spicy food can all cause blood vessels to rapidly dilate, leading to temporary flushing. While any single trigger usually fades quickly, repeated exposure over months and years places ongoing stress on vessel walls, contributing to longer-lasting redness and visible vessels.

Skin Barrier Dysfunction & Underlying Conditions:

When the skin's barrier isn't functioning properly, irritants penetrate more easily and trigger ongoing inflammation that keeps vessels dilated and skin reactive. This is especially relevant in conditions like rosacea, where a genuine immune and inflammatory response causes persistent redness, visible vessels, and sometimes bumps or pustules, often requiring more than lifestyle changes alone to manage effectively.

Our Go-To for Redness and Vascular Concerns

We combine targeted light-based technology with a strong skincare foundation to calm redness at its source and protect your results long-term. Because visible vessels don't repair themselves once formed, our focus is on safely collapsing and clearing the problem vessels while supporting the skin barrier so new redness is less likely to develop in the first place

  • Broadband Light (BBL):

Our foundational treatment for general redness and overall skin tone. Broadband Light delivers energy that's selectively absorbed by haemoglobin in problem vessels, causing them to gradually collapse and clear, while also calming background redness and improving overall complexion evenness with each session.

  • Clear Silk:

A gentle, low-downtime treatment using a 1064nm Nd:YAG laser, similar to Laser Genesis, designed specifically for sensitive, reactive, or rosacea-prone skin that may not tolerate more intensive treatments well. The longer wavelength gently heats the skin to calm redness and support the skin barrier with minimal discomfort, making it a great option for those just starting out or with more delicate skin.

  • Clear V:

A Sciton 1064nm Nd:YAG laser specifically designed to target veins. The longer wavelength penetrates more deeply than BBL, making ClearV especially effective for larger, deeper, or more stubborn visible vessels, such as prominent thread veins around the nose and cheeks that haven't fully responded to broadband light alone.
