Skin Needling: The Secret To Youthful-Looking Skin

Looking for a way to turn back the hands of time and restore a more youthful complexion? Skin needling may be the answer. Skin needling, also referred to as dermal needling and microneedling, is an advanced treatment and one of the most effective methods for stimulating collagen and elastin production.

At Dermal Glow, we use the SkinPen® system, which was not only the first FDA-approved microneedling device but is also a market-leading product used in clinics around the world.

Read on to learn how skin needling can keep your skin looking younger for longer.

What skin conditions are SkinPen® treatments suitable for?

Skin needling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that stimulates the body to produce new collagen and elastin. The treatment can minimise the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as soften texture. As a result, skin appears smoother, softer, and more youthful.

If you struggle with any of these skin complaints, skin needling may be a worthwhile treatment to explore:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scarring
  • Enlarged pores
  • Loose, sagging skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Pigmentation and age spots

How do SkinPen® treatments work?

Skin needling is an advanced skin treatment that has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its highly effective impact on reversing the signs of ageing. The procedure involves using a pen-like device to make tiny punctures in the skin. These micropunctures encourage a natural regeneration response that can be broken down into three phases:

1. Inflammation Phase

The pierced skin triggers an immune response, sending increased blood flow to the skin to cleanse and protect the micropunctures.

2. Proliferation Phase

The newly cleansed puncture will begin to rebuild tissue and blood vessels that will cover the wound while it heals.

3. Renewal Phase

The closed micropuncture will be rushed with collagen to help the skin regenerate. This firms and flattens the surface of the skin, reducing the signs of ageing and evening tone and texture.

What is involved in skin needling treatment?

Before we begin your first microneedling treatment, we ask that you visit us for a thorough consultation. This allows us to ensure you are a suitable candidate for skin needling, or whether an alternative treatment may better suit your needs.

Once we’ve established that skin needling is right for you, we’ll cleanse your skin, ensuring it is a sterile surface prior to treatment. While some beauty clinics may allow you to apply numbing cream pre-cleanse, we ask our clients not to. Numbing cream directly impacts your skin’s response to microneedling and can reduce the efficiency of the treatment.

After the skin is prepped, an aesthetician will evenly pass the SkinPen over the skin, allowing the fine needles to create tiny microchannels. You’ll feel a combination of pressure and vibration, and some people may feel a slight prickling sensation. In general, this treatment is not considered painful; however, the level of discomfort can vary depending on individual pain thresholds.

Should you wish to further enhance your treatment, we can also apply a skin-specific active ingredient at this point, allowing it to penetrate deeply into your skin for dramatic results.

Before you leave the clinic, we’ll soothe your skin with an application of calming ingredients and supply you with a post-treatment cream to apply at home.

How long does microneedling take to recover from?

While everyone has a different recovery period, you can expect to see the results within just a few days of treatment. Initially, the skin will be inflamed and tender, but this begins to subside within 12-24 hours.

We recommend you be extremely thoughtful about your activities during the first 48 hours while the skin is at its most fragile state. You’ll also be given thorough advice on aftercare, some of which you can find here.
